Shattered Glass

Mister Scarecrow

Yes. I’ve done it again.

The child is asleep,
yet cradle still rocks.
Darkness engulfs,
it’s time now to dream.

Oh, what thoughts cross a mind
so fragile and young?
What creatures will come
when light goes away?

Closet open, just a crack…
Bed is creeking, no one moves…
Shadows moving, no one there…
Window knocking, not the wind…

Nightmares are real, they come to life
    whenever mommy is not there.
Wind still whispers the dreaded name,
    the boogeyman with no face.
Ravens and bats, crows and dead,
    Tommyknockers at your door.
I am the one who holds you at night,
    I’m the singing Mister Scarecrow…

By my hand and my hand alone,
you will either fear or not.
All that has ever made you scared
I can bring to life.

See the pumpkins dancing mad
over the grave of your dad.
Teddy bears without one eye
come to play with you all night.

By the striking of the clock
I will sing you a new song.
Chiming little lullaby
for the baby of the mad.

Nightmares are real, they come to life
    whenever mommy is not there.
Wind still whispers the dreaded name,
    the boogeyman with no face.
Ravens and bats, crows and dead,
    Tommyknockers at your door.
I am the one who holds you at night,
    I’m the singing Mister Scarecrow…

An old man with a hushed voice,
flowers eating your cat’s tail.
Before the dawn there’s no one there
to keep you safe from harm.

Only me and only I
can reach deep into your mind.
I can make sure you are safe,
so will you become my friend?

Tell me “no” and never again
will you soundly sleep.
All I want is you with me,
with your Mister Scarecrow.

Nightmares are real, they come to life
    whenever mommy is not there.
Wind still whispers the dreaded name,
    the boogeyman with no face.
Ravens and bats, crows and dead,
    Tommyknockers at your door.
I am the one who holds you at night,
    I’m the singing Mister Scarecrow…

I can keep you safe and sound,
don’t you fear your Scarecrow…
